Background of the study
Semantic boundary markers are linguistic elements that delineate conceptual categories and clarify meaning in communication. In the Hausa language, such markers play an important role in academic and instructional discourse, particularly among educators in Kano. This study evaluates the use of semantic boundary markers—such as conjunctions, prepositions, and discourse particles—by Hausa educators to maintain clarity and precision in language. Classroom observations and teacher interviews reveal that effective use of these markers helps prevent ambiguity, fosters coherent explanations, and reinforces subject-specific vocabulary (Abdullahi, 2023). The study further explores how educators balance traditional linguistic practices with modern pedagogical requirements, and how these boundary markers contribute to semantic clarity in lesson delivery. By analyzing instructional materials, recorded lectures, and teacher narratives, the research aims to uncover patterns in marker usage and assess their impact on student comprehension and language development (Usman, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized importance of semantic boundary markers in facilitating clear communication, there is limited systematic research on their usage among Hausa educators in Kano. Preliminary data indicate that inconsistent application of these markers may lead to semantic ambiguities, hindering effective teaching and learning. This study addresses the gap by documenting and evaluating marker usage in educational settings.
Objectives of the study

  • To document the use of semantic boundary markers in Hausa educational discourse.
  • To analyze their role in clarifying meaning and preventing ambiguity.
  • To propose recommendations for improving marker usage among educators.
    Research questions
  • What semantic boundary markers are commonly used by Hausa educators?
  • How do these markers affect clarity in classroom instruction?
  • What strategies can enhance their consistent use?
    Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insights into how semantic boundary markers enhance academic communication in Hausa. Its findings will help improve teaching practices and support curriculum development, ensuring more effective knowledge transfer (Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining semantic boundary markers among Hausa educators in Kano and does not extend to other educational levels or linguistic aspects.
    Definitions of terms
  • Semantic Boundary Markers: Linguistic elements that delineate and clarify meaning.
  • Educators: Teachers or instructors responsible for academic instruction.
  • Hausa Language: A Chadic language spoken in northern Nigeria.
